Clay Beaker

Clay beaker found by contractor William Ganson near Achavanich along with the remains of a bronze age coffin, complete with skeleton and other grave goods.  The coffin was a cist dating from around 1800BC.  The beaker appears to have been made to provide food and drink for the journey into the afterlife.

John Henderson

Statue of John Henderson, Thurso also known as Johnny Moozie, Starney, Glossey, Ringie, Buckteeth and Rotten Legs.  John worked as a Town Crier, Officer of the Courts, grave-digger, messenger and doorman at public entertainments and occasions.  Highly renowned in the town as a faithful and trusted servant.

Pickling Barrel

Pickling Barrel used in the kiln in Shore Street. The fish would be gutted and split down the middle for kippering, smoked fish would be filleted. They were then put into the barrel which was filled with pickle made from water and salt c. 1880

Full length black and white photograph of  the Rev. Walter Ross Taylor who preached in four churches in Thurso. He was the last minister to preach in Old St. Peters church and the first to preach in new St. Peters or as it was known The Established Church.

Robert Dick

White plaster bust of Robert Dick taken from his deathmask.  He died on 24th December 1866 and is buried in Thurso cemetery, beside the river, not far from the spot where he found the Northern Holy Grass.

Cross bears Runic writing and dates from Viking times around 1000AD. GE(?) RTHI: UBIRLATHITA: AFT: IKULB: FOTHURSIN.  Translating into English this is ..... MADE: OVERLAYTHIS: AFTER: INGULF: FATHER IS.  Or “…made this overlay in memory of his father Ingulf”.

Silver Plated Cigar Box

Silver plated cigar box in the form of a gun carriage, with hardwood base and silver plated wheels and handles.  The lid of the cigar box has a cannon and five cannon balls.  The mouth of the cannon is wide, possibly for holding matches.  One side of the box has engraved “Presented by the Countess of Caithness to the Caithness Artillery Volunteer Association, October 1877”.

The Ulbster Stone

Sculptured symbol stone known as "The Ulbster Stone". Originally unearthed at the old burial ground at St. Martins Chapel, Ulbster in 1770. It was later removed and placed upon a large conical mound in front of Thurso Castle. The mound had been originally used as a base for a flag pole.
